NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCILS 

1. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STUDENT COUNCILS?

The NASC is an organization of schools from around the United States and some foreign countries that have student councils or similar organizations.

2. WHO SPONSORS THE NASC?

The NASC is sponsored by the Division of Student Activities of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

3. HOW DOES MY SCHOOL BECOME A MEMBER OF NASC?

To become a member of the NASC, your school must affiliate with the Division of Student Activities of the NASSP. To do this, an Affiliation Form from should be filled out and sent with the annual Affiliation Fee of $65.00 to:

The Affiliation fee covers the student council, the National Honor Society, Middle Level Student Activities Association, National Junior Honor Society, etc. It is also provides your advisor with automatic membership in the National Association of Student Activity Advisors.

4. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP IN THE NASC?

Membership in the NASC involves affiliation with the DSA of the NASSP and benefits include:

1. Access to 1.7 million dollars in scholarship money for students.

2. Discounts for leadership training programs for student leaders, including National Leadership Training Centers and the annual NASC Conference.

3. Access to research studies and the Resource Information Center .

4. Three copies of the magazine LEADERSHIP each month of the school year.

5. Legal assistance

6. Audiovisual, written and speaker resources.

7. Free copies of publications on their original printing.

5. DOES THE NASC HOLD AN ANNUAL CONFERENCE?

Yes, usually during the third or fourth week of June. Approximately 1700 students and 400 adults attend the NASC Conference. Students stay in host homes and the adults stay in a local hotel. The conference usually features a number of notable speakers and student lead workshops.

6. IF STUDENTS ARE HOUSED IN PRIVATE HOMES AT THE NATIONAL CONVENTION, ARE THERE GUIDELINES FOR THE SELECTION OF HOST FAMILIES?

Yes, the national guidelines for hosting are part of this guide.

7. WHAT ARE NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CAMPS?

National Leadership Camps (NLC's) are week-long leadership development programs sponsored by the Division of Student Activities. These camps are conducted throughout the summer months. The DSA sponsors seven of these camps, two for middle level students and five for high school students. National will send information regarding these camps to member schools.

8. IS THERE A CONSTITUTION FOR THE NASC?

Yes. A copy is included in this section of the handbook.

9. IS THERE A TOLL FREE NUMBER FOR NASC?

Yes, it is the toll free number for the NASSP. Just dial it and wait for the appropriate prompt. The toll free number is 1-800-253-7746.

10. IS THERE A WEB SITE FOR THE DSA?

Yes, www.nassp.org will get you to the NASSP web site and you will find prompts to lead you to the DSA.

11. ARE THERE ANY OTHER NATIONAL STUDENT COUNCIL ORGANIZATION?

Yes, the American Student Council Association (ASCA) which is sponsored by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Their membership is limited to elementary and middle schools. There are materials available from them as well as the NASC.
