Host Family Selection Guidelines

How to select a host family for the NASC national conference:

- Develop an application form for host families (sample attached).

- Distribute the host family guidelines with the application form.

- have prospective host family fill out an application form, sign and return it to the school.

- Request that host families sign the guidelines and return the form to the school.

- Keep all information about host families in file.

- Screen each application thoroughly

- Check the references provided by host families.

- Conduct an initial drive by inspection of the neighborhood and houses that are being considered to host students.

- Contact each family by telephone.

- If there is any doubt about the reputation of the family, visit “in person” to the host family.

- Keep a data file about the host families, including emergency phone numbers.

- Conduct meetings for host families.

- Provide an information sheet for host families with conference program outline, guidelines to follow and phone numbers to call in case of a medical emergency.

- Have a liaison person “on call” at all times for host families who need assistance or have questions before and during the students home stay.
