MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT GOVERNMENT OFFICER ELECTIONS
Qualifications to Run for Office
All students who are currently enrolled and meet the criteria below are eligible to seek any student council or class office.
A. The student must have a 2.0 cumulative grade point average.
B. The student must not have received an unsatisfactory conduct grade for the marking period prior to the election.
C. To run for student council president a student must be in he eighth grade during his/her term of office.
D. To run for a grade level (class) office a student must be a member of the grade level class in which they are seeking office.
E. Each student will present a petition to run containing the signatures of:
a. 25 fellow students
b. the administrator directly responsible for the student
c. the student's parent(s) or guardian(s)
Election Rules
All students present in school the day of the election should be eligible to vote.
Provision should be made for students who are out of school on school field trips to cast absentee ballots.
The student who receives the most votes for a specified office will be declared the winner.
Whenever possible, voting machines should be used to conduct election and all sixth graders are eligible to seek office if the election takes place prior to the end of the first marking period.
Ballots must be tabulated in the presence of the student council advisor or class sponsor. If voting machines are not available a student election committee should tabulate the ballots. Candidates for office may not serve on the election committee.
Election must be conducted through the process of secret ballot.
The period of time allowed for election campaigns should be limited by the school.
